The following is a brief summary of decisions/outcomes from the Council Meeting held on the 2 October in Toronto, on the occasion of the 2011 PanAm CGS Geotechnical Conference. Full Minutes of the meeting will be available in due course, and will be distributed to the Member Societies.
Two new Member Societies, Chinese Taipei Geotechnical Society and the Lebanese Geotechnical Engineering Society were welcomed to ISSMGE.
The Secretary General Neil Taylor was reappointed for 8 years until the Council Meeting in 2019.
The proposed change of the Israeli Member Society to the European region was approved.
Following a debate and discussion, Council rejected the proposal to change the name of the society; the name of the Society remains the Internaitonal Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.
After a brief discussion, Council rejected the proposal to change the name of the International Conference.
GeoWorld, the new networking site developed specifically for geotechnical engineering professionals in conjuction with ISSMGE, was described.
New Guidelines for Technical Committees are being prepared; the life of technical committees is to be dissociated from the presidential term.
New Corporate Associates were welcomed to ISSMGE; new initiatives to involve them in the society's activities were proving successful.
