ISSMGE TC Workshop on "Scour and Eroison"
Description
About Workshop on “Scour and Erosion”
Indian Geotechnical Conference (IGC) 2020 is being organized by Indian Geotechnical Society Visakhapatnam chapter in association with Department of Civil Engineering of Andhra University College of Engineering, Visakhapatnam during December 17-19, 2020. The present ISSMGE TC 213 Workshop on “Scour and Erosion” is planned as the preconference workshop on 16th December 2020. In view of the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic situation, the workshop will be organized in online mode. India has long coast line and varied topography and is experiencing the problems of beach erosion caused by sea waves, scouring of river/canal banks and subsoil erosion during cyclone induced heavy rainfall and active monsoon period. Hence, the proposed workshop has great significance as it helps in drawing the attention of the authorities to understand the potential mechanisms and causes for scour and erosion of soils and take appropriate measures for their mitigation.
Visakhapatnam is a coastal Indian city and is plagued with the problems of beach erosion, subsoil erosion due to presence of erodible soils in certain areas, in particular in hill slopes. Hence, the workshop is planned with expert lectures by eminent academicians and practicing engineers from India and abroad to address the various issues related to sea erosion, river erosion and subsoil erosion caused by surface and subsurface flow of water. The suitability of various erosion and scour protection structures such as Groins, Geotubes, Gabion structures, etc. for beach erosion issues and Geobags, Gabion/ Geocell mattress systems will be discussed during the workshop. The workshop is intended to create awareness and expose the civil engineering professionals to the causes for soil erosion / scour and impart knowledge on various mitigation methods. It is expected that the deliberations of the event will be useful for tackling problems of scour and erosion not only in India, but also in all parts of the world susceptible to such problems. The workshop addresses the issues of coastal and river scour and erosion, surface/sub-surface erosion of soils and deals with the remedial measures to be adopted to control scour and erosion.
