This webinar consists of two parts. The first part addresses the basic features of geotechnical damages caused by earthquakes with a particular emphasis on subsoil liquefaction. A motion picture of real ongoing liquefaction will be demonstrated. Then, the causative mechanism of liquefaction will be introduced. After talking about assessment of liquefaction likelihood, discussion will be made of liquefaction-induced deformation of subsoil (subsidence and lateral flow) as well as their mitigation. The second part will concern recent experiences and problems encountered during the earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand. Those problems are not yet solved.
