Smart Observational Method (SOMe)

AsRTC14: Smart Observational Method (SOMe)

The technical committee on SOMe aims to promote interdisciplinary research and practice among geotechnical engineers and IT engineers including Big-data analysis, smart sensing, IoT, wireless network, AI, etc. The committee aims to bring together researchers and practicing engineers with expertise in geotechnical and/or IT engineering, to layout research objectives in above four research areas and thereby promote research practice worldwide.

Action Plan: The committee identifies the team of researchers in different national societies who would join the new technical committee, then forms subcommittees in each nation to organize local workshops, seminars and symposiums. The results would be shared with each other.

The technical committee aims to promote and facilitate advances in technical recommendations, guidelines, and practices in SOMe emphasizing on the adoption of cutting-edge digital technologies. The committee seeks to promote the sharing of new developments that can be applied to traditional geotechnical engineering and supports efforts by the members to advance guideline development and technical recommendations in their countries.

Action Plan: The committee structures subcommittees to collect information regarding technologies applicable to geotechnical engineering. The subcommittees that include IT professionals develop the technical guidelines and recommendations using that information.

The technical committee intends to assist workshops and conferences at all parts of the international, regional, national and local levels.

Action Plan: The technical committee organizes invited lectures by geotechnical experts who have experience with IT technologies during the conferences and workshops. Although the implementation of digital technology is done by IT engineers, geotechnical engineers must figure out what to implement in the field of geotechnical engineering. Through invited lectures, our society gets ideas on how to use digital technology in geotechnical engineering. Furthermore, the committee organizes the sessions or discussions on the cases that are resolved through collaboration between professionals in geotechnical engineering and IT.
