The twenty-seventh episode of International Interactive Technical Talk has just been launched and is supported by TC102. Jason DeJong, José Estaire, Henry Asamany and Julia Sorgatz are discussing with Marc Ballouz about "Site Characterization".
ISSMGE is pleased to announce that all papers published in the 5th International Conference on Geotechnical and Geophysical Site Characterisation (ISC'5) that was held in Queensland, Australia in 2016 are now available through the ISSMGE online library.
To promote the use and improve the interpretation of site characterization methods.
Site characterization for geotechnical purposes encompasses a wide variety of technologies, including mechanical and geophysical in-situ tests, drilling and sampling, remote sensing and monitoring. New devices as well as variants of existing devices continue to be developed, as do improved methods for correction, manipulation, interpretation, and property estimation of generated data. Areas where rapid growth is occurring include visualisation of data sets and the use of machine learning for data analysis and property estimation. In-situ tests have a critical role in geotechnical characterization that is particularly evident in areas such as tailing storage facilities, offshore geotechnics, or even planetary exploration. The committee promotes the advance of site characterization technology and procedures for all applications and maintains a close relation with application committees such as TC203 (Earthquake), TC209 (Offshore), TC220 (Field Monitoring), TC221 (Tailings and Mine Wastes) or TC309 (Machine Learning).
To foster interactive communication and collaboration between TC102 members.
Committee activities are oriented to facilitate communications, connections, and collaborations between individual practitioners and researchers as well as at higher organizational levels, including national and regional groups and associations. The committee website is maintained as a resource for individuals to identify experts in the field. Committee meetings, in-person and online, are used to communicate with members on ongoing and upcoming activities. Representation by committee members to their national and regional societies are used to leverage and support synergistic activities. Regular participation in and organization of conferences is pursued to engage and assemble the international community of industry and research experts. The committee also provides a supporting role to other synergistic activities when appropriate.
To host and endorse international conferences, symposia, and other events.
The committee has a long-standing tradition and commitment to being heavily engaged in the ICSMGE conference every four years, often serving to organize several technical sessions. The committee flagship conference is the International Symposium on Geotechnical and Geophysical Site Characterization (ISC), held typically every 4 years, which aims to cover all the tools and methods of site characterization. The committee also supports actively other regularly recurring conferences with a more specialist focus: the Cone Penetration Conference series and the International Symposium on Pressuremeters, both typically held every 4-5 years. The committee also provides strong support for other specialty conferences, such as those about the flat dilatometer, as well as for national and regional conference activities. The committee also selects and facilitates the James K. Mitchell and the Michele Jamiolkowski honorary lectures, typically given at either the ICSMGE conference or one of the themed ISC or CPT conferences.
Dissemination of Site Characterization importance for Geotechnical Engineering.
The products of activities supported by the committee, including conference proceedings as well as additional keynote lectures and online webinar material, continue to effective disseminate the contributions and importance of the site characterization field. There are additional opportunities to more directly communicate its importance to the broader society, and the committee is interested to hearing ideas that committee members and others may have.
