History

DATE OF FOUNDATION
The Finnish Geotechnical Society was founded on Jan. 21, 1951. Present at the first meeting were 8 persons.

BOARD MEMBERS 
The society has the following board members elected for the current period.

MEMBERSHIP
The society started in 1951 with 8 members. At the end of Sept. 2000 the secretariat of the FGS managed the affairs of 476 members and 34 corporate members. The members of the society are composed of 365 "geotechnical group" members (177 of which are members of ISSMGE and 111 "engineering geologist" members).

ACHIEVEMENTS
Outstanding achievements are better to be judged from outside the Society, might be difficult because of language. The society has hounourable members, is giving awards to achievements in geotechnical engineering etc.

The FGS will celebrate its 50th anniversary in Jan. 2000, for which occasion a new history of the society will be published (in Finnish). The available published history is covering the period 1951 to 1986.
