6ICEG was awarded to the Indian Geotechnical Society in October 2007 at the ISSMGE Council Meeting at Brisbane.
A 15 member Organizing Committee, planned and executed the activities, guided and helped by the Congress Advisory Committee (headed by President ISSMGE), Environmental Geotechnics TC5, a National Advisory Committee and a Technical Committee of the Congress.
The website www.6iceg.org was launched in the second half of 2008. Abstracts were received till August 2009 and final papers till June 2010.
6ICEG was spread over 5 days (Mon. to Fri.) from 8th to 12th Nov. 2010, with the final day being reserved for site visits.
304 abstracts were received from 40 countries. 253 papers were finally accepted (69 from India) and published in a 2000 page Proceedings (2 Volumes + CD) along with 22 invited papers (including Mercer lecture).
328 delegates from 31 countries participated in 6ICEG. 88 were from India. The largest number of overseas participants were from Japan, USA and UK.
161 papers (from amongst 253) were presented in person in 14 parallel sessions. 18 invited lectures (from amongst 22) were presented in person and one by video mode in 8 plenary sessions.
28 exhibitors displayed their products and services at 32 stalls and also made presentations in a dedicated 100 minute Industry Session.
A Young Geoenvironmental Engineers Debate focused on Career Challenges and a panel discussion on R&D collaborations focused on Opportunities for Research Partnerships.
The ISSMGE 75th Anniversary Session dwelled into the past, the present and the future.
The evening events comprised of a cultural event featuring dances of India & bollywood followed by a welcome banquet (with a band in attendance) on 8thNov.; a visit to the Red Fort and its sound & light show on 9th; and a reception on 10th in the form of a mela (rural fair with juggler show, puppetry, clay pottery, bangle making on display).
The companions program comprised of 6 visits - and demonstration of Saree Tying, Rangoli, Mehendi etc.
A Fun Counter provided elephant rides, camel rides, autorickshaw rides, cycle rickshaw rides, yoga session, meditation session and laughter session to interested delegates.
