Brazilian Young Geotechnical Engineers Gather in Brasília for the XI GeoJovem Symposium

From 24 to 28 August 2026, Brasília will host the XI Brazilian Symposium of Young Geotechnical Engineers (GeoJovem), one of Brazils main meeting points for students, researchers and early-career professionals in geotechnical engineering.

GeoJovem has a tradition spanning more than two decades. The first Brazilian Symposium of Young Geotechnical Engineers was held in 2004, and since then the initiative has become an important platform within the Brazilian Association for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ABMS) for bringing new generations into the national geotechnical community. Previous editions have combined technical presentations with opportunities for young engineers to interact directly with experienced professionals, researchers and colleagues from across Brazil and abroad.

The 2026 edition will be particularly significant because GeoJovem will take place as part of COBRAMSEG 2026, Brazils main national geotechnical conference and the official biennial congress of ABMS. The XXII Brazilian Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering will bring together academia, industry and public institutions around the theme Geotechnics and Climate Change: Resilient Infrastructure and Cities.

This year, participants will have the opportunity to attend several major geotechnical events taking place together in Brasília:

  • XXII Brazilian Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering COBRAMSEG
  • XI Brazilian Symposium of Young Geotechnical Engineers GeoJovem
  • XIII Portuguese-Brazilian Congress on Geotechnics CLBG
  • X Latin American Rock Mechanics Symposium LARMS 2026

The combination creates an unusual opportunity for young geotechnical professionals to interact not only with the Brazilian community, but also with specialists from Portugal, Latin America and other regions.

GeoJovem technical contributions cover a broad range of subjects, including foundations, slope stability and retaining structures, dams and tailings facilities, environmental and mining geotechnics, field investigation and monitoring, experimental soil mechanics, geosynthetics, unsaturated soils, engineering geology, artificial intelligence and the response of geotechnical engineering to climate change. For GeoJovem papers, the first author must be 35 years old or younger at the time of the event, reinforcing the symposium's role as a dedicated platform for emerging professionals.

Although the paper submission period has already closed, it is still possible to participate in the conference. Registration remains available after 25 July and will also be available on site, according to the organizers. Students have dedicated registration categories, and international participants registered for LARMS are also entitled to participate in COBRAMSEG.

For young geotechnical engineers, researchers and students in South America, the event offers a valuable opportunity to follow current technical developments, meet peers from different countries and build connections with the wider geotechnical community.

Brasília is ready to welcome the next generation of geotechnical engineers.
