Prof. Lyesse Laloui, President of ISSMGE, will deliver the 21st Nonveiller Lecture at the 10th Conference of the Croatian Geotechnical Society (HGD), to be held in Split, Croatia, from 12 to 14 November 2026, a distinction named for Prof. Ervin Nonveiller and held previously by leading international figures in geotechnical and rock engineering. Staged as a specialised conference under the patronage of the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM), the event carries the theme Geotechnical Engineering in Soft Rock and Heterogeneous Rock Masses and brings together specialists in geotechnics, soil mechanics and rock mechanics alongside representatives of public institutions and practice.
Prof. Laloui's lecture, Advances in Numerical Design and Analysis of Underground Nuclear Waste Repositories, draws on research he leads at EPFL's Laboratory of Soil Mechanics into the safety and performance of deep geological repositories, one of the areas in which geotechnical expertise is most directly called on by governments and industry. He is the first speaker announced for the conference.
The conference is organised by HGD with the University of Split, the University of Rijeka, the University of Zagreb and the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, with the Split-Dalmatia County and ISRM among its supporting bodies. It is a further point of contact between ISSMGE and its national societies and sister organisations across Europe.
