ISSMGE TC308 Energy Geotechnics is pleased to highlight an upcoming minisymposium at the Engineering Mechanics Institute Conference 2026 (EMI 2026), titled:
Coupled Multi-Physics Mechanics of Geomaterials for Energy and Environmental Applications.
The minisymposium is organised by Dr Angelica Tuttolomondo (EPFL, Switzerland) and Dr Anne-Catherine Dieudonné (TU Delft, The Netherlands) and will take place as part of EMI 2026, to be held in Boulder, Colorado (USA), from 25 June 2026.
The session responds directly to the pressing challenges of the global energy transition and environmental management, which increasingly require a robust understanding of geomaterials under coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) conditions. Topics of interest include subsurface applications such as CO storage, hydrogen storage, geothermal energy systems, and nuclear waste repositories.
Contributions are invited that address:
- experimental investigations across scales (from laboratory to in-situ),
- advanced constitutive modelling, and
- computational frameworks grounded in physical understanding of coupled processes.
The minisymposium will provide a cross-disciplinary platform for researchers and practitioners working at the interface of mechanics, geotechnics, energy, and environmental engineering, showcasing recent strategies to better characterise and design geomaterials for complex energy applications.
