The paper presents a new single-surface isotropic hardening elastoplastic model for unsaturated cemented soils formulated within the critical state soil mechanics framework. This model, called the WR2-Unsat model, is an extension to unsaturated conditions of a recently proposed constitutive law for structured soils. The model performance is analysed by numerically simulating a few water-undrained triaxial tests on an ideal fine-grained soil, emphasizing as the changes in pore saturation and the breakage of cementation bonds can cause the occurrence of potential instabilities. The numerical study is supported by a theoretical analysis of soil stability, aimed at providing simple stability criteria for foreseeing the occurrence of potential instabilities.
