Assessment of geotechnical parameters for wind turbine foundation design based on CPT, DMT and laboratory tests

In the international context of the climate crisis, renewable energy plays an important and growing role in the energy system of the European Union. Wind energy is one of the main sources of renewable energy, being harnessed through wind turbines both onshore and offshore. Geotechnical design of wind turbine foundations requires detailed knowledge of the mechanical behaviour of the soil. This paper presents the assessment of geotechnical parameters based on CPT, DMT and laboratory tests results at various wind farm locations. Correlations used worldwide are applied to Romanian soils in order to verify their reliability to determine the geotechnical parameters from the in-situ tests results. The aim of this study is to assess the reliability and feasibility of using in-situ tests to calculate the geotechnical parameters required for wind turbine foundation design.
