Centrifuge modelling to rapidly assess the impact of surficial drill cuttings on shallow foundation sliding resistance


The presence of drill cuttings on the seafloor can impact both installation and operational performance of shallow foundations. This paper presents select results from centrifuge experiments that used real cuttings recovered from the seafloor, as is part of a wider study into their impact on penetration and sliding resistance. It is shown that a layer of uncemented cuttings is likely to be retained within skirted compartments, rather than fully squeezed out during installation, and that this can influence sliding resistance. This study demonstrates the ability of centrifuge modelling to tackle practical applications in short (project specific) timeframes.
