Combined Loading Apparatus for Monotonic and Cyclic Loading of Foundations

Combined Loading Apparatus for Monotonic and Cyclic Loading of Foundations

A novel test apparatus has been developed to study foundations under combined planar loading at the new ETH beam centrifuge facility. The proposed assembly consists of a pair of stepper-motor actuators, applying lateral loads at different-variable heights from the foundations reference point. Each actuator is connected to a rigid column by means of sliding-hinges. The latter is transmitting the loads from the actuators to the foundation level. The selected connections ensure that the foundation is free to settle or uplift, depending on the studied system and the applied load path. With appropriate regulation, the developed assembly is capable of applying any desired combination of lateral translation,  and rotation,  (displacement-controlled mode) or lateral load,  and overturning moment,  (load-controlled mode). The target vertical loading is achieved by adding a variable mass at the top of the rigid column. The capabilities of the experimental setup are demonstrated through testing of single miniature reinforced concrete (RC) piles subjected to lateral loading.
