In this study, the effect of surface loading on wall and ground responses in deep excavation was examined. Centrifuge tests and finite-element analyses were conducted to assess the influence of loading position (es), area (ABL) defined by width (Bs) and length (Ls), and load magnitude (Q). Results indicated that smaller es, larger ABL, and higher Q resulted in larger wall deflection, ground settlement, and lateral earth pressure. These effects reduced near the greenfield condition at es/Hex, Bs/Hex, and Ls/Hex of 1.2, 2.0, and 2.0, respectively. The impact of increasing Bs/Hex was more pronounced than Ls/Hex, showing directional sensitivity. A modified influence factor, based on stiffness influence factor (IF), was proposed to quantify the effects of surface loading. Case studies verified the methods accuracy in predicting excavation responses under nearby surface loads.
