Determination of the undrained shear strength of soft clay soils through use of fall cone test

An intensive laboratory program on a soft clay soil from the San Martin region of Peruvian Amazon was established. The testing procedure includes an evaluation of basic geotechnical parameters, with a particular emphasis on determining the undrained shear strength. To evaluate the fall cone's applicability in estimating undrained shear strength, the conventional laboratory miniature vane shear test was used. The experimental data were utilized to calibrate the cone factor, K, which allows us to connect undrained shear strength with cone penetration for various water contents. The study demonstrates that the fall cone can be used to evaluate the undrained strength of soft soils in a quick and economical manner.
