Development of CPT-Vs correlations for soft quaternary clays of Szeged city Hungary
Development of CPT-Vs correlations for soft quaternary clays of Szeged city Hungary
The role of small-strain parameters of soils in contemporary engineering geology is significant. Empirical correlations for shear-wave velocity (Vs) at Szeged city in the Southern Great Plain region of Hungary were assessed using research measurements of seismic piezocone test (SCPTu) and multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) results that were collected. In general, numerous existing cone penetration tests (CPT) -Vs or CPTu-Vs correlations for soils have been examined. Five indices were used in the assessment, including the ratio of the estimated to measured Vs values, the root mean square error (RMSE), the ranking index (RI), the ranking distance (RD), and the Variable Coefficient (CVK). Afterward, new empirical correlations for Szeged were formulated, and their performance was evaluated by comparing the predicted and measured values of Vs. This correlation offers a method to estimate Vs (shear wave velocity) from CPT data tailored to Szeged city's clay-like dilative soils, as per the Robertson 2016 chart. This recommendation constitutes a valuable contribution to the practice of geologists and engineers not only in Szeged city but also in other similar depositional environments in Hungary.
