EFFECT OF SAMPLE PREPARATION ON SHEAR AND COMPRESSION BEHAVIOR CLAYS


 Due to the high cost of material disposal and the associated environmental problems, the engineering community is under an increasing pressure to find alternative solutions to dispose or reuse unsuitable soils. This paper examines the strength and compression properties by using different preparation methods to understand which sample preparation technique better mimic the in-situ behaviour. The in-situ specimens have been tested in One Dimensional Compression and Unconsolidated Undrained, in order to access the structure induced by various size of clay peds. Part of the soil was ground whilst the rest was chopped in small peds. Both materials were used to produce dynamically compacted samples. Additionally, X-ray imaging has been carried out to analyse the pore space developed in the compacted specimens. Results reveal that the compression curves for the ped compacted specimens plot to the right of the grinded specimens and shift towards intrinsic compression line as the ped size increases. All ped compacted specimens show a stiffer behaviour up to yield, after which converge towards the intrinsic compression line. Furthermore, the strength of the ped compacted specimens revealed a linear increase above the grinded specimens.  The extra strength and stiffness is attributed to the structure retained within the peds of soil.
