Eurocode 7 – Second generation: anchors, rock bolts and soil nailed structures

Among the objectives of the second generation of Eurocode 7 was to consider developments in the industry, including the introduction of common geotechnical structures so far not covered in the Eurocodes, aiming towards harmonising geotechnical design. Among the new structures introduced in the EN 1997-3 are rock bolts and soil-nailed structures, which are the paper's focus. To complement the discussion on tension-supporting elements, the paper also briefly describes the anchor clause's revision. It provides an overview of significant aspects of geotechnical design, considering limit states, material and durability requirements and demonstrates verification methods. As the reliability of the structures in question in the whole process, from design through execution to testing, is to be harmonised, some guidance to the compulsory supplement standards is also provided.
