Eurocode 7 – second generation - numerical methods

The development of the second generation of EN1997 has reached its final stage. The formal vote will take place in autumn 2024. Numerical methods are now largely considered for the design of geotechnical structures both for SLS and ULS verifications in terms of mechanical and hydraulic issues. This paper presents how numerical methods are now implemented in EN 1997 and three main topics are dealt with: - (i) SLS verifications with the importance of the choice of constitutive models in line with the geotechnical design model. Representative values of the ground properties shall account for all these situations based on the derived values presented in the ground model, -(ii) ULS verifications with the input and ant the output factoring approaches: several examples are discussed in order how to choose and implement these two approaches. The verification of structural elements including nonlinearities is highlighted. Other approaches where geotechnical resistances may be calculated by numerical models by forcing geotechnical structures to fail by particular mechanisms are also presented. -(iii) hydraulic verifications where numerical modelling can help the designer to check the hydraulic gradient and the variation of pore water pressures as proposed now by EN 1997 regarding hydraulic issues.
