Eurocode 7 – Second Generation: Retaining structures – Looking beyond the partial factors for safety in design

The second generation of Eurocode 7 brings many changes to various aspects of geotechnical design. The new Clause 7 “Retaining structures” of EN 1997-3 is one of the updated elements of this standard. As code-compliance in design is often associated with ultimate limit state verification and application of partial factors, there are less obvious improvements, which ensure the reliability of design involving ground-structure interaction and improved harmonisation of design rules between different Eurocode parts. In geotechnical design, it is vital to identify the relevant design situations, to formulate design assumptions, and to understand their underlying uncertainties. Application of the safety factors and verification of limit states is only one of the last steps in ensuring that the design is safe and fit-for-purpose. The paper presents the major elements related to design of retaining structures in the new Eurocode 7.
