Experimental and FELA evaluation of Uplift Capacity of Strip Anchors in Sand and Failure Mechanism evaluation using Image Processing

This study focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of image analysis for accessing the failure mechanism in sand for strip anchors, particularly the PIV measurements compared to conventional measurement techniques. In the study, 1g physical modelling of strip anchor, a plane strain problem is performed considering the embedment depth of the strip anchor as 2B and 4B, where B is the width of the strip anchor and the relative densities of sand as loose (DR = 15%) and dense (DR = 50%). The comparisons are made for the failure zone evaluated using image analysis and numerical outcome from finite element limit analysis (FELA), the uplift capacity factor from experiments and FELA and the load-displacement measurements from conventional measurement technique and image analysis. The experimental results are compared with the FELA model, and it is observed that the experimental outcomes align well with the FELA results. Additionally, the displacement contours obtained from the image analysis closely match the FELA outputs.
