Feasibility of Piles Vibrodriving in Clayey Soils

Feasibility of Piles Vibrodriving in Clayey Soils

The feasibility of vibratory driving of piles in clay has always been questioned. The uncertainty related to the capability of vibratory pile installation when clay is encountered has shied some operators away from using that technique in such sites. This paper firstly presents two case studies where vibratory driving was used to install piles in clayey sites in Belgium and France. The observations conducted during these installations are compared with installation predictions results obtained using the Hypervib method. The comparison indicates a good match with regards to the refusal depths. The Hypervib method is further used to conduct a parametric study on the feasibility of vibratory driving installation of a monopile of typical dimensions in soil profiles that include clay layers. The results of this study provide an indication of the feasibility of vibratory driving for installing monopiles through clay layers of varying strength.
