Hywind Tampen pionners an innovative shared anchor concept where each floating offshore wind turbine is secured by 3 mooring lines each connected to a suction anchor serving up to three floaters in a honeycomb pattern, effectively reducing the anchors required from 33 to 19, reducing fabrication costs and most importantly installation time. Equinor has successfully completed the field installation of Hywind Tampen in 2023. The shared anchor is a novel concept, developed in parallel with the anchor design and requires close collaboration between Geotechnics, Structure and Coupled Analysis. This article dives into the geotechnical and structural engineering challenges and solutions that were adopted in the design of the floaters 19 anchors: soil conditions, loads, suction anchor geotechnical and structural design, followed by a brief discussion on the installation experience.
