Integration of Numerical Methods in the Second Generation of Eurocode EN 1997
The development of the second generation of EN1997 has reached its final stage. The formal vote will take place in autumn 2023. A new subclause specific to numerical methods, involving two generally applicable factoring approaches, has been introduced in the new general part, prEN 1997-1. The paper deals with main issues covered by the new subclause, with recent additions and the application to different types of geotechnical structures (details are covered in prEN 1997-3). Various admissible approaches for staged construction of retaining structures will be treated. The handling of geotechnical structural elements such as anchors and piles as well as their interfaces to the ground has been an open issue until recently and will be discussed.
