Laboratory Tests on Dynamic Liquefaction Potential of Unsaturated Sand

It has been discovered recently that even under specific conditions of unsaturation, consolidation, and density, unsaturated soils can liquefy.

Undrained dynamic triaxial tests were performed in the laboratory using an initial effective stress of 100 kPa and a strain-controlled loads on unsaturated Hostun sand RF. Relative density used varies from 50% to 70% with various initial saturation degrees ranging between 60% to 96% in order to define the threshold saturation degree to liquefy the sand.
