Maputo coastal protection project: 10 years after

From 2012 to 2015 the Maputo Coastal Protection Project was implemented. The project aimed at reversing the effects of the lack of maintenance, the raise of the sea level, the loss of beach sand and reinstating the conditions of the coast to make it a tourist attraction and a leisure area for the Maputo inhabitants. Ten years after the construction was completed, the works were surveyed to check if the design assumptions and specifications were adequate and if the overall performance of the implemented measures were adequate. Under these measures, the sand nourishment and the construction of seven new groins represented the largest share. All measures proved efficient and the works completed under the project show a very good behaviour and no signs of distress.
