Modelling destructuration of sensitive clays


Soft sensitive clays typically exhibit stiffer responses beyond that of their reconstituted counterparts due to interparticle bonds. Bonds degradation as irreversible deformation accumulates can result obvious softening responses. For highly sensitive clays, the rate of destructuration gradually decreases as effective stresses increase during consolidation, which will apparently influence the undrained strength, especially in the deep layers. A new destruturation law, which considers the influence of current mean pressure, is proposed and combined with S-CLAY1 model. The improved consistency between test data and model predictions demonstrates the effectiveness of the newly proposed destruturation law.
