Observations on use of international standards for marine soil investigations

For design and assessment of offshore structures, commonly used international standards refer to ISO 19901-8 as primary standard for marine soil investigations. ISO 19901-8 broadly covers the planning, execution and reporting of (1) on-site intrusive investigations and (2) laboratory investigations of soil and rock. A major revision of this standard was published in 2023, with mandatory requirements increasing from 80 to 500. This increase largely applied to requirements for in situ testing. This paper presents early observations on the use of the 2023 version. The observations are from a contractor perspective, where contractor is defined by ISO 19901-8 as party or person responsible for an assigned scope of work described in project specifications. The focus of the observations is on industry improvements, innovations and challenges related to the 2023 revision.
