Relevance of non-uniform dissolved gas concentration in testing gassy soils


Gas in soils presents an important challenge in onshore and offshore geotechnical engineering. Degradation of organic matter can saturate pore fluids with dissolved gases, which may exsolve under anthropogenic and environmental loading conditions to form entrapped bubbles. These gas bubbles can alter the mechanical behaviour of peat and other organic or marine soils. This study investigates the uniformity of gas distribution in peat samples prepared using axis-translation technique combined pore fluid flushing. A new experimental programme, including local pore pressure measurements, is conducted to assess gas distribution during the test. An axisymmetric fully coupled hydro-mechanical numerical model is then developed to simulate dissolved gas transport during flushing. The findings provide guidance for representative laboratory testing of gassy soils.
