Simplified Model for Determining the Depth of Influence below Surface Loaded Areas
Determination of depth of influence (zi) is crucial for settlement and soil improvement calculations. Most methods rely on elastic theory, often overestimate zi significantly. This paper compiles prevalent practical methods used. Improvement of a simplified model which takes into consideration the effect of increase in shear strength with depth acting on the vertical boundaries of soil element below surface loaded area is performed, deriving preliminary formulas to predict depth of influence.
