Site selection and early-stage design of trenchless submarine cable landings
Site selection and early-stage design of trenchless submarine cable landings
There is an increasing need for offshore wind developments and submarine interconnector projects. The selection of the landing area has a major influence in construction techniques, drilling equipment requirements, construction schedule, project risks and costs. Often offshore wind cable landings are under prioritised during the project design until a late stage but are crucial for project viability. This paper illustrates what processes and data are required to select an adequate coastal area for landing using trenchless installation technologies including Horizontal Directional Drilling and Direct Pipe. Once a landfall site has been selected through methodologies such as constraint mapping and BRAG assessments, the site investigation and early-stage design works required to complete a successful project can be scoped and undertaken.
