Fangzhou Albert Liu is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at McGill University, Canada and an adjunct professor at the University of Alberta. He received his PhD in Geosystems Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology (US), where he also completed MSc degrees in Civil Engineering and Computational Science and Engineering, following his undergraduate education at the University of Bristol (UK). His research focuses on the mechanics and resilience of geotechnical systems, with particular interests in tailings and mine waste, landslides and flow failures, and emerging approaches for geotechnical monitoring. His work combines laboratory and physical modelling, constitutive and numerical analysis, remote sensing, and field observations to understand how geomaterials and geotechnical systems evolve toward instability and how early indicators of failure can be identified. He works closely with industry on challenges related to the safe operation, closure, and long-term performance of tailings storage facilities. Albert is active in the Canadian geotechnical community and currently chairs the Canadian Geotechnical Society’s Student Competition and Scholarships. He has also served as Technical Committee Chair for Tailings and Mine Waste 2025 and contributes to professional education in critical state soil mechanics and mine waste geotechnics.
