Dr. K.H.S.M. Sampath is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. He earned his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering with First Class Honors from the University of Moratuwa and completed his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Before taking up his current post at Moratuwa, he served as a Senior Tutor at the University of Melbourne and held visiting faculty appointments across several institutions, including as a Visiting Professor at Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT-RS), Thailand.
His research focuses on geo-reservoir engineering, carbon dioxide capture and geological storage (????????_2 sequestration), soft soil stabilization, and ground improvement techniques. Dr. Sampath’s work has earned significant academic recognition, garnering over 1,000 citations with an h-index of 18 (and an i10-index of 19). He was nominated for the University of Melbourne Vice Chancellor’s Award for the Best PhD Thesis and recipient of prestigious accolades including the Pearson William Tewksbury Scholarship, the George Lansell Memorial Scholarship, the Best Undergraduate Research Award by the Sri Lankan Geotechnical Society, and multiple University of Moratuwa Awards for Outstanding Research Performance.
In addition to his academic output, Dr. Sampath actively bridges research and practice through extensive high-impact consultancy projects. His major engineering assignments include slope stability analyses, foundation design recommendations, and advanced finite element modeling for complex deep excavations, shoring systems, quay walls, and infrastructure developments for key stakeholders such as the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB), Colombo Port City, and international projects such as the Mule 037 Hydro Power Project in Burundi. He serves as an Academic Editor for journals including Geofluids and Geomechanics and Geophysics for Geo-Energy and Geo-Resources, and holds the position of Honorary Secretary for the Sri Lankan Geotechnical Society (SLGS).
