TC219 System Performance

System Performance of Geotechnical Structures

Short name: System Performance (TC219)

TC219 1ST Webinar on Resilience Evaluation in Geotechnical Engineering

The executive committee of TC219 is hosting a series of webinars on resilient evaluation in Geotechnical Engineering. The topics of the webinar series will include but not be limited to the frontiers of resilience evaluation and design, or development and terminati

Chair of TC219, Prof. Gang ZHENG gave keynote lecture related to “system performance of geotechnical engineering” at the 13th CNCSMGE held in Tianjin

The 13th CNCSMGE held in Tianjin, China, on 18 - 21 July 2019, was hosted by the Chinese Institution for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (CISMGE) and organized by the Tianjin University, the Tianjin Civil Engineering Society, the Technical Committee of Soil Mechanics

System performance includes but no limit to the System Safety Performance, System Resilience Performance, Constructability Performance, and Low Environmental Impact Performance. To improve the system performance of geotechnical structures, give the engineers the practical systematic framework and apply this knowledge to design and assessment procedures, the performance based design theories have been proposed in recent years and continue to be an active area of research. The TC219 aims to disseminate and develop knowledge and practice on performance based design methodologies in geotechnical engineering. To promote cooperation and expertise exchange within the research area of system performance, this TC will deal with the following important technical issues:

  1. Organize the international conferences, symposiums and technical workshops with the aims to promote cooperation and exchange of information concerning the active areas of research and developments on system performance in geotechnical practice, such as the 1st International Conference on System Performance in Geotechnical Engineering, intended to be organized at the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021;
  2. Host a workshop or special session at the next ICSMGE, Sydney 2021;
  3. Create webinars for technical training purpose and encourage members to contribute to ISSMGE program of webinars;
  4. Encourage members to give keynote lectures, state-of-the-art lectures, general reports for conferences organized by the International Society, regional conferences and conferences organized by member societies.

The new TC on System Performance will focus on the following actions:

  1. Identify some well-documented case histories and most-cited publications on System Performance to show on the TC website;
  2. Encourage the applications of the latest research results of Performance Based Design in practices of geotechnical engineering;
  3. Ensure that the outcomes on Performance Based Design are captured and disseminated via guidelines and technical recommendations;
  4. Develop a website dedicated to system performance of the geotechnical structures
  5. Establish and maintain close contacts with relative TCs, such as TC204 (Underground Construction), TC205 (Safety and Serviceability), TC211 (Ground Improvement), TC302 (Forensic) and TC304 (Risk).

  1. Host and endorse technical workshops, international conferences, symposiums and other evens. For example, host a workshop or special session at the next ICSMGE, Sydney 2021; organize a joint workshop with TC204 at the event of Geotechnical Aspects of Underground Construction in Soft Ground - TC204 Cambridge, 29 June - 1 July 2020, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
  2. Promote the presentation of the findings of the TC at the main and discussion sessions at the ISSMGE conferences and other events.
  3. Encourage the active participation (papers, lectures, workshops) of the TC members at regional conferences. For example, the 17th European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering 1-6 September 2019, Reykjavik, Iceland; the 16th Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (16ARC) 14-18 October 2019, Taipei, Taiwan; the XVI Pan-American Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering 18-22 November 2019, Cancun, Mexico; the 13th Australia New Zealand Conference on Geomechanics 1-3 April 2019, Perth, Australia, and 17th African Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering 6-10 October 2019, Cape Town, South Africa.

  1. Promote a greater interaction among engineers engaged in geotechnical engineering to achieve greater cooperation and facilitate the exchange of information, experience, knowledge and new ideas on system performance;
  2. Reduce the gap between the State-of-the-Art and the State-of-the-Practice on system performance in Geotechnical Engineering;
  3. Interact with national and international standards committees and call for workshops on relevant topics;
  4. Serve as technical supports in promoting the advanced new design methods on system performance, as well as in development of related interactive monitoring and observational methods with possibility of adjusting design decisions during the construction process.
