Treatment of a Clayey Soil using Lime and a Waste Product Material (Slag)

The paper deals with a laboratory study, conducted to investigate the improvement of a clayey soil properties using a waste product addition (blast furnace slag), obtained from El Hadjar smelter (Algeria). The waste product was used alone or combined with lime at different proportions by weight (4%, 8% and 16%). Physical tests (Atterberg limits) and mechanical tests, (Proctor, CBR and UCS) were performed on the clayey soil sample and the clayey soil mixed with different proportions by weight of lime and/or blast furnace slag in order to demonstrate the improvements brought about by the added products. The obtained results show that when used alone, the blast furnace slag produces a little effect on the physical and mechanical properties of the treated soil compared to the main additive (lime). However, by combining in equal proportion the blast furnace slag and lime, the combination is more effective as expressed by the decrease in plasticity, volume changes and increase in resistance.
