The International Congress on Environmental Geotechnics (ICEG) is the premier international event on environmental geotechnics and is organized by the Technical Committee 215 of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). The conference is held under the auspices of the Hellenic Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.
The 9th ICEG follows the successful organization of the previous ICEGs in Edmonton, Canada (1994), Osaka, Japan (1996), Lisbon, Portugal (1998), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2002), Cardiff, UK (2006), New Delhi, India (2010), Melbourne, Australia (2014), and Hangzhou, China (2018). The 9th ICEG conference theme “Addressing Global Challenges” highlights the important role that geoenvironmental engineers play in protecting public health and promoting sustainability and prosperity on this planet. More specifically, the 9th ICEG elucidates the ongoing scientific and professional work by the environmental geotechnics community, in addressing major societal challenges such as Urbanization, Aging Infrastructure, Energy Security, Resource Scarcity and Preservation, Climate Change and Natural Hazards, Protecting Public Health, as well as the Education of the next generation professionals.
The conference features the Rowe Lecture, distinguished plenary speakers, four Bright Sparks Lectures, 34 parallel technical sessions, an outstanding poster session, and three panel discussions on topics that expand the footprint of environmental geotechnics not only in areas that have been part of the environmental geotechnics field, but also on emerging issues related to climate change, geo-energy and mining, biogeotechnics, and geosynthetics.
The proceedings of the 9th ICEG were prepared using the ISSMGE Conference Paper Review Platform. Each paper was reviewed by at least two or more reviewers. The organizing committee is indebted to the scientific committee and the hundreds of reviewers who reviewed the submitted abstracts and papers. The reviewers provided extensive review comments and recommended for acceptance of the papers that addressed the review comments. In total 244 papers have been published in this conference. The papers are published online in the Online Library of the ISSMGE with Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs). In addition, the papers are compiled in 5 volumes totaling 2,312 pages that include all the papers separated into the main conference themes.
